Southport


Nestling on the north-west coast is the Victorian seaside town of Southport; this charming town is a great day out.

Southport is famous for its seaside and shopping although the heyday of the great British seaside holiday has long gone the town still retains its charm with its lakes shops and parks not forgetting its beaches at Southport and Nearby Ainsdale where there is also a nature reserve and extensive pine woods.

The main boulevard Lord Street affords sheltered shopping with its Victorian glassed verandas lining practically the whole street, so even in a shower you can browse in comfort. There are many independent shops and cafes along the street a must see is the Victorian Wayfarer’s arcade compete with walkways and spectacular glass roof.

For the children there is plenty to do with the funfair and the Dunes waterpark for those into swimming as well as the beach and plenty of parks at Botanic gardens, Hesketh Park and the wide open space of Princes Park next to the beach.

The pier attracts many visitors and you can walk or catch the train to the café at the end, lookout for the skateboard park as you journey along. On the promenade at the entrance to the pier there are cafes and amusement arcades as well as a beautiful vintage carousel that is open during the summer months.

Southport plays host to many events through the year with its own Air show, the world famous Flower show as well as the National firework competition in the autumn to name just a few.


Southport has several fine golf courses including the famous Royal Birkdale which has hosted many prestigious competitions including the open and Ryder Cup.
