Cowes Yachting capitol of the World
Cowes is the gateway to the Isle of Wight, the town is known globally as the venue for the international yacht racing.
Cowes has been synonymous with international yacht racing since the founding of the Royal Yacht Squadron in 1815. The town gives its name to the world's oldest regular regatta, Cowes Week, which occurs annually in the first week of August. Later on in the summer, powerboat races are held.
Queen Elizabeth I is credited as laying the foundations of Cowes growth into a world-renowned Centre of boat-building when she commissioned a new ship to be built here.
Later royal patronage by King George IV firmly established Cowes as the yachting capital of the world in 1826 the Royal yacht Squadron organized a three day regatta, the following year the king presented a cup to mark the occasion.
