Wells Cathedral & Bishops Palace


Wells is a delightful cathedral city situated at the foot of the Mendip Hills. The crowning jewel of this little city is undoubtedly the beautiful cathedral with architecture from the 13th to 15th century. This beautiful building is well worth exploring.

The 13th century west front of the cathedral is stunning and is covered with religious statues originally 400 depicting angles saints and prophets, many of these were destroyed by the Puritans in the 17th century; time your visit to watch the stone glow with the setting sun. Inside look out for the astronomical clock in the north transept with its moving figures of jousting knights and large dial it is one of the oldest working clocks in the world.

The cathedral and its associated buildings make up the largest ecclesiastical courts in England. Wells is compact enough to be easily explored on foot. This lovely city with its ancient streets is full of interest; Wells is England’s smallest city.

Highlights include the moated bishop’s palace and gardens which are great to explore the walls date back to 1206, nest to the drawbridge is a bell on a rope that the swans used to pull for food.

A must see is the Vicars close a small mews of beautiful cottages, the town has plenty of shops to browse and there is a busy market. The 16th century Crown hotel is where in its yard the Quaker William Penn preached before being arrested. Later he went to America and founded Pennsylvania.
