Ludlow the most perfect town


The market town of Ludlow is a great destination for a day or even a weekend away this lovely market town has loads of history as well as plenty of shops to browse.

Ludlow hosts a famous annual food fair and it makes for a great day munching your way around the stands and seeing the town at the same time.

The town is famous for its beautiful listed building's and fine Georgian market square.

Broad Street has been called one of the finest streets in England, with many examples of architecture 500 listed buildings to be exact. John Betjeman described Ludlow as the most perfect town in England.

Perched on a rock overlooking the river there is an impressive castle In medieval times it was made the headquarters of the council of the marches set up by Edward IV in the 15th century.

The History of the area is amazing the wars of the roses saw many of the battles of this conflict fought in this area, the castle was damaged in the Civil war.

There are many fine shops and good places to eat in Ludlow as well as shops selling local produce.

St Lawrence church is a must see with remarkable stained glass and many other historical artefacts the tower which can be climbed is a massive 41 metres tall.

Simon Jenkins called the church the cathedral of the marches and included it in his book England’s thousand best Churches. The poet AE Houseman has a memorial on the church wall where his ashes were scattered, Houseman based a large part of his work on south Shropshire his Shropshire lad being very famous. There is on street parking for short duration but the park and ride is most convenient.
