Berwick upon Tweed Bridges and walls


Berwick-upon-Tweed has had a turbulent past and has been fought over for centuries eventually surrendered to the English in 1174 it became part of Northumberland in 1974.

Positioned on the Scottish Border Berwick-upon-Tweed was protected by its Castle one can still see the remains of this Castle as well as a superb complete set of 16 century ramparts which you can walk around.

Berwick remains a military town and has one of England's earliest barracks which houses the King's Own Scottish Borderers Museum the town museum and art Gallery exhibiting local history.

This museum Includes some outstanding works of art by Degas and Daubigny asa well as a Chinese ceramic display in the gymnasium Gallery.

Berwick is renowned for its bridges having three bridges spanning the River,the Royal border railway bridge, Royal Tweed Bridge and Berwick bridge.
