Wensley

Unlike some of the other Dales Wensley takes its name from the town of the same name.

Wensley was a market town for the Dale for two hundred years.

Holy Trinity Church has Saxon foundations and wall paintings in the nave which are thought to date from 1330.

In 1956 the old market cross was unearthed in the churchyard by schoolchildren. This was lost as a consequence of the plague when the villagers abandoned the town going to nearby Leyburn.

Although they subsequently returned the market was no longer held and the cross disappeared only to be unearthed hundreds of years later by the schoolchildren.

Nearby is Bolton Hall which is on the road to Leyburn.
