Westdean

Westdean is known for its connections to Alfred the great as it is here that he was reputedly met by Bishop Asser, and it is believed to be the town known as Dene.

In the centre of the village. there are ancient monuments said to be the site of Alfred’s Palace and a medieval manor house.

Nearby there is a flint built 13th century Rectory, as well as a part Norman built church of all Saints.

Inside the church there are memorials by Jacob Epstein in memory of Lord Waverley or John Anderson, as he was known of the Anderson air raid shelter fame.

Alfred reputedly had a fleet moored at Dene.
