Weston Under Penyard
Weston Under Penyard
This small village near Ross on Wye, dates back to at least Roman times it was here that there was a Roman Garrison called Ariconium.
Although founded as a Garrison it was later used a smelting centre for iron ore mined from the Forest of Dean.
There are a few small remains of a mediaeval castle as well as 17th-century house to the north of the village. The house has unusual battlement walls, said to have been incorporated by the owner to please his bride.
There is a fine church of St Lawrence, which looks down over the village and has Norman arches and a 14th century bell tower.
