Witton-le-Wear
Set on a hillside this Durham village has rows of stone houses with open views to the Moors this small village has a church of St Philip and St James’s, although dating from Norman times was rebuilt in 1902. In the churchyard there are the ruined remains of an old cross and a sundial, nearby are the remains of Witton Castle, which was built in the 15th century, and largely rebuilt 400 years later. The village which slopes down to the River Wear also has the remains of some mediaeval houses along with Witton tower.
