Witham on the hill

This Lincolnshire parish was mentioned in the Doomsday book, the great land survey ordered by William the Conqueror in 1066.

Charles Kingsley in his book called Hereward the wake explains that the estate was owned by Hereward the Wake. The village has a green where the stocks still remain these have been covered by a modern canopy nearby the Bywells, spring still flows.

On the opposite side of the village green is a preparatory school, which was once Witham Hall, not far from the village stands the Bowthorpe oak this mighty tree has a trunk 40 foot in circumference. It is thought to be at least 500 years old.
