Winsford stones and MP's
The lovely Somerset town of Winsford is best approached from the South and the Tiverton Road, where you can enjoy the lovely views and wooded countryside.
This lovely corner of Exmoor is where the river Winn joins the river exe there is a lovely little packhorse bridge crosses the river, nearby is the Royal Oak Inn.
Just up the road from the Ford is the church of St Mary Magdalene Church Norman origin, but has been added to over the years and has architectural features of every century since.
Winsford also has a Wesleyan Chapel and a plaque on the wall displays that this was the birthplace of Ernest Bevin, who was socialist MP and trade unionists leader.
Lying just off the road to the south-west is another interesting feature that of a memorial called the Caractacus stone.
This stone, which has been dated from between the fifth and seventh century, was placed in honour of the British chieftain Caractacus who fought the Romans, the stone is believed to be in memory of a descendant of Caractacus and has an inscription cargaci nepus, which simply means descendant of.
