Stokesay Castle
Located in the heart of Shropshire this beautiful fortified manor house is amazing and well worth a visit do not forget to take your camera.
Stokesay Castle is not really a Castle but a Manor house and a fortified one at that, it was owned after the conquest by the Montgomery family the first owners they built a small keep adjacent to the hall.
In 1281, the property went to the Lawrence family, a well-to-do wool merchant. He used it as a country house outside of Ludlow and is largely responsible for the Stokesay that we see today.
The house passed to the Cravens, who built the gatehouse and it was during their ownership that the Castle actually took part in any military action when it was defended very briefly against the parliamentarians.
The Castle has had various owners and eventually passed to the Allcroft family in 1869. later it was preserved and maintained by the Society for the preservation of ancient buildings and now more recently it is administered by English Heritage and open to the public. The Castle is a treasure house for those interested in architecture, having many interesting features.
