Great Orme and Pier


This one time Victorian resort sitting on the edge of a beautiful bay has remained unchanged for nearly a century complete with pier and beautiful seafront buildings it is easy to see why the place was popular with the Victorians. Llandudno is one of the most visited towns in Britain.

Perhaps the most famous feature of this pretty resort is the great Orme which dominates the town; a stunning headland jutting out into the Irish Sea, the great and its opposite partner the little Orme frame the shore beautifully. There is a tramway to the top of the 679ft summit of the great Orme were the view of the bay is stunning. The Great Orme has recently been acquired by the National trust.

Llandudno is a delight to visit with a lovely shingle beach and fantastic pier, for those interested in architecture the seafront promenade is lined with grand Georgian houses that provide a perfect backdrop to the pier and the great Orme. The houses are beautiful, on fine days, the children will love Mr Codman’s authentic punch and Judy show on the promenade, Codman’s punch and Judy has been an attraction here for over a century.

The town itself has many interesting shops look out for the Victorian shopping arcade; the town was a favourite holiday destination for the family of Alice Pleasance Liddell, the inspiration for Alice in Wonderland, the newly completed Alice trail takes you around the town taking in many points of interest. The children will love finding the wooden statues of characters from the story which are on the trail.

For those interested in skiing there is dry ski slope on the Orme itself as well as a park. On the other side of the great Orme is the west shore beach this was the place the Liddell’s frequented.

The surrounding area has lots to offer the visitor with destinations like Conway and Colwyn bay in easy reach. For those interested in gardens there is the beautiful Bodnant gardens a short drive away.
