Lower Slaughter

The slaughters despite the ugly name are both villages of great charm and beauty, lower slaughter seen here with its crystal clear stream, old mill and the stone clapper bridge is a dream village for artists and photographers.

The small but picturesque village is seen on countless calendars and postcards and is very popular with tourists.

Both villages are less than a mile apart the name slaughter is the subject of debate some say it means muddy place, others say it derives from the 12th century lord of the manor, de Sclotre and over time the name has been altered by country folk to Slaughter.
