Tobermory

This pretty fishing village on the isle of Mull is very busy in the summer due to the fact that the children’s program Balamory was filmed here. The program finished in 2005 but regular repeats means that the children still want to see the place. A Balamory booklet can be obtained from the tourist information offices in Oban or Tobermory.

The town is reached by ferry from Oban as you approach the island through the sound of Mull the town is slowly and beautifully revealed as you turn into the bay. The church spire clearly seen, then the lovely row of pink blue and yellow buildings that line the quay against the backdrop of the wooded hillside.

Tobermory is the islands main town and as well as fishing boats in the harbour there are yachts as it is now a popular place for leisure boats.

The bay at Tobermory is linked to a tale of sunken treasure and Spanish galleons, these were blown of course by the storm that ravaged the armada in 1588, and one was sunk in the bay, it is reputed to have been carrying 30 million gold ducats. Subsequent diving expeditions so far have failed to come up with anything of note to support tale. Information on this and on the island and area can be had from the Mull museum.

The nearby island of Staffa with its strange basalt formations was visited by Mendelssohn; the island of Iona has a restored Benedictine Abbey. Tobermory was the home of Fitzroy MacLean the diplomat sent by Winston Churchill to communist Yugoslavia to meet Tito.
