Adelstrop

Anybody who has a love for poetry will recognize the name straightaway this village was made famous, even immortalized by Edward Thomas’s poem.
Thomas wrote his poem about the village because his train stopped there, one sunny afternoon.

The steam hissed some one clear’d his throat.
No one left and no one came on the bare platform.
What I saw was Adlestrop – only the name.

The station has long since gone, but there is a plaque in the village bus shelter with the poem inscribed below. The village of Adlestrop is a cluster of golden stone houses and cottages as well as a Georgian mansion.

Adlestrop Park is Gothic mansion set in grounds landscaped by Repton, both private.
The church of St Mary Magdalene contains monuments to the Leigh family who have owned the Park since 1553.

Thomas Leigh was rector of the Park in the early 19th century and his granddaughter was Jane Austen who was a regular visitor to the Rectory, which is now Adlestrop house. The Rectory stands among magnificent trees and there is a schoolroom and cottage nearby.
