Ledbury

The charming Herefordshire town of Ledbury was the birthplace of the poet John Masefield who wrote of the town.

Pleasant to the sight,
Fair and half-timbered houses,
Black and white,

This is an apt description for this pleasant town has changed little since he penned these lines; Ledbury has a beautiful charm and is popular with day trippers. The main street is still lined with the fair and half-timbered houses including the market hall that dates to 1655.

Around every corner there is a pleasing view, from the 12th century Church of St Michael and all Angels to the stilt like market house. This unusual structure is supported on chestnut timber legs reputed to have come from wrecked Spanish armada galleons. Just a short walk up the street is Ledbury Park a very large timber framed house once owned by the Biddulph family.

Nearby across the road is the 16th century Feathers hotel a magnificent timbered black and white building that is still welcoming guests in style? The Tudor walk of Church lane is incredible and very photogenic with the tilted Tudor houses lining the cobbled streets leading the eye to the church with its 200ft high steeple in the distance. The poet Elizabeth Barrett Browning also lived here during her childhood.
