The coastal town of Southend has always been the weekend destination for Londoners; this traditional resort has all the trappings of the seaside holiday, amusement arcades, nightclubs, novelty and souvenir shops, fish and chips etc.
Its greatest attractions have to be the lovely sandy beach and the pier, the longest in the world; just on, the edge of Leigh is the lovely old fishing village.
The pier has just been enhanced with a new cultural centre, complete with artist studios, cafes and an auditorium. Further along the coast you can explore the towns of Westcliff, Chalkwell and Leigh.
Old Leigh in particular has quaint narrow cobbled streets with craft shops, cafes, art galleries, as well as the traditional cockle sheds a haven of peace away from the busier Southend.
