The Suffolk town of Sudbury is known as the birthplace of one of England’s greatest painters Thomas Gainsborough 1727 – 1788. The place was also the inspiration for Charles dickens fictitious town of Eatanswill.

Sudbury is a busy market town and like many others in Suffolk grew prosperous on the wool trade and silk weaving, some of which is still carried out here today. In Gainsborough’s time the town was also a busy port on the river Stour.

The stream of visitors today make a beeline for Gainsborough’s House, which houses the largest collection of his work in the world, this lovely 16th century house, was his birthplace. The collection includes the, a boy and girl in a landscape, which is the earliest surviving portrait by the artist.

Other notable building s are the Medieval Anchor Inn and the 15th century Salters hall.
