Southampton

Southampton is famous for its docks and harbour with its unique tidal system, two tides, and a longer high water. The city is a busy place and has some of the best shopping on the south coast; there are also art galleries, museums and parks to fill the day.

The small maritime museum in particular is worth a visit set in a lovely 15th century warehouse near the waterfront. There are many exhibits telling the story of the great liners built here as well as the titanic story it sailed from here on its ill-fated voyage.

Aviation enthusiasts are also well catered for in the Solent Sky museum which honours R J Mitchell the designer of the Spitfire fighter aircraft that was built nearby at the Supermarine works.

Parts of the old town are interesting to explore on foot here you can see the dolphin hotel where the author Jane Austen stayed. The church of St Michaels is the oldest in the city dating from 1070 and miraculously was undamaged in the bombing of WWII.

Nearby are some fine Tudor building such as the medieval merchant’s house 1290 and Tudor House museum and garden. Oxford Street is great for pubs bistros and restaurants.
