Harlech


The town of Harlech is synonymous with its famous castle and rousing Welsh song men of Harlech, overlooking the scenic Tremadoq bay the castle is a formidable looking fortress set in one of the most dramatic settings of any castle in the United Kingdom.

The castle was commissioned by Edward I as another of his ring of steel castles built to subdue the Welsh; it is part of a UNESCO world heritage site that includes other similar castles and walls. The castle was originally at the edge of the sea that has now receded.

The castle kept the welsh subdued till 1404 when it was taken by Owain Glyndwr who had himself crowned prince of wales here, witnessed at the time by noble envoys from Spain France and Scotland. The anthem, men of Harlech was inspired by a siege during the wars of the roses.

The town is popular destination and is very pleasant to visit with plenty of small shops cafes and tearooms as well as antique shops. Harlech also boasts a very fine beach. Bordering the national park, it is a good base for a holiday on the beach and for combining with trips into the hills and Rhinog mountains.
