Fishguard

Sited atop the headland between the ferry port and one time fishing harbour Fishguard is a charming little town but it is often missed out by travellers who are more intent on the journey to and from Ireland.

The town is a delightful jumble of pubs shops and cafes and a pleasant place to visit, walk uphill to the town centre where there are regular markets or Stroll down to the picturesque harbour in lower town. This was used for the setting of the 1971 film of Dylan Thomas’s under milk wood which stared Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor.

Fishguard is also the place of the last invasion by a foreign army, on the 22 February 1797 a diversionary attack was mounted against England by a motley collection of mercenaries and released convicts, the main French arm was to attack Ireland. Blown off course enroute to Bristol they landed nearby but were routed by the local militia and town’s folk including women. One such lady Jemima Nicholas who armed with only a pitchfork single handed captured 12 mercenaries.
