Carmarthen Caerfyrddin

Carmarthen like Caerleon is one of the oldest towns in wales and Carmarthenshire’s county town, the place was a Celtic hill fort strategically placed on a hill above the river Towy.

The Romans replaced this and built a town complete with fort and amphitheater, the Normans followed and built a castle but little remains today apart from a gatehouse and some towers being largely destroyed in the civil war. The town had a priory and it was here that the famous black book of Carmarthen was written, this is now in the national library of wales in Aberystwyth.

In Welsh folklore Carmarthen is believed to be the home of Merlin or Mryddin in welsh an oak tree at the end of priory street was linked to a prophesy that a spell cast by him said when the tree died Carmarthen would fall the tree died in the 1970s.
