Dolgellau

This lovely little market town has a long history the Romans mined for gold here, the mines closed in the 1930s, however the queen’s wedding ring is made from gold yielded by the mine. The towns name reputedly means meadow of the slaves and refers to those unfortunates forced by the Romans to mine the gold.

This fine looking stone built town grew rich on the wool trade in the 18th and 19th centuries, the grand buildings bear witness of this past prosperity. These days its tourism and the great outdoors that the town relies on this is not a problem as the town has plenty of visitors being a great destination and base to explore this region of wales.

Snowdonia the Mawdach estuary and Cadir Idris are all accessible from the town. Dolgellau is a centre for welsh folk music and is home to the national centre for welsh folk Music. The town is great to explore with a town trail brochure available from the tourist information office.
