Montgomery
Montgomery
Picturesque stone and brick built Georgian houses line the square of this, one of the prettiest small towns in wales. Montgomery also has a castle although in ruins it affords great views of the surrounding countryside; the castle was built by Henry III to command the approach to central wales.
The church of St Nicholas, which is mainly 13th century, has a vaulted ceiling with intricate coloured bosses there is also a carved altar screen. The churchyard has a robbers grave, John Davies was hanged for highway robbery in 1821, he maintained his innocence and prophesied that as proof no grass would grow on his grave for a generation and non-did.
