Porthmadog

Sitting on the Llyn peninsular and in the Snowdonia National Park the town is a popular destination with visitors also bound for Portmeiron and Clough William-Ellis’s amazing showpiece village.

This town was born out of the creativity, energy and enthusiasm of one man a 19th century MP William Alexander Maddox. He reclaimed land but causeways and constructed a harbour the causeway embankment project alone almost ruined him.

The causeway became the route of the Ffestiniog railway which transported huge amounts of slate from the quarries in Blaenau Ffestiniog to the harbour and port.

The railway line has been restored and along with the other line the Welsh highland railway the town has now become a mecca for steam train buffs, the trains transport visitors through some of the most breath-taking scenery in wales.
