Situated at the junction of two rivers the Tweed and Teviot, the lovely town of Kelso with its pretty cobbled market square and Georgian houses is a nice place to visit the town has a certain charm and atmosphere almost continental.

Kelso was the site of an important 12th century abbey, which was destroyed by the earl of Hertford in 1545; the ruins can be visited and are some of the most impressive Romanesque architecture in in Scotland.

Kelso position meant it was strategically important in the border wars between England and Scotland toady you can cross the river tweed on a fine five arched bridge built by John Rennie in 1803, he used this as a model for his famous Waterloo bridge completed in 1817.

Nearby is Floors castle which is the largest castle in Scotland still occupied, it is home to the duke of Roxburgh, built by William Adam it can be visited and has some beautiful Brussels's tapestries in the drawing room.
