The small pretty Dee Valley village is famous all over the world for its games and royal connections, the Braemar gathering was famous long before Albert, and Victoria settled on the place for the royal summer country retreat. Members of the royal family still spend the summer holidays at Balmoral castle.
Braemar sits on a plain situated in Deeside on the banks of the Cluny burn and ringed by mountains; it is an excellent base for hill walking and for winter sports.
The gathering is held every summer on the first Sunday in September highland event include, tossing the caber, highland dancing, pipe playing and hammer throwing.
