Dumfries

The town of Dumfries is known as the queen of the south, and for the lovely red sandstone bridges crossing the river Nith, the banks of which are lined with grassed areas and parks.

The town was fiercely fought for over the centuries because of its strategic position and its nearness to the Solway Firth, the destruction over the years means that most buildings date from the 17th century.

The town is full of history it was here that Robert the Bruce started the war of independence and captured the castle. The poet Robert Burns lived here until his death in 1796. His house the burns house is now a museum to this celebrated poet. The writer of Peter Pan JM Barrie was schooled here.

For Burns fans there is also a Robert Burns Centre situated in an old mill on the banks of the river, his mausoleum is at St Michael’s kirk.
