Edinburgh

The city of Edinburgh grew from a group of medieval buildings clustered around a castle and a labyrinth of narrow streets. As the city prospered a new town was required this was built to accommodate the expanding population. The neat grassed lined boulevards and crescents of this can be seen around Princes Street. Edinburgh today is one of the most exciting cities in the British Isles and one of the most visited.

In 2005 the city was declared the first ever literary capitol of Europe due to its connections to famous writers over the centuries, such as Sir Walter Scott ,Arthur Conan Doyle, Robert Louis Stevenson and the more modern authors such as Alexander McCall Smith and of course JK Rowling who wrote the Harry Potter novels while living there.

Edinburgh castle dominates the city atop a ridge and over the centuries, this symbol of Scottish independence has been at the forefront of the nation’s history. These days the castle hosts international events and is home to museums, its past as a royal residence and military garrison can be explored.
