Malham

Lovely Malham village is idyllic set in Malhamdale with the clear waters of the tree-lined stream flowing through the village under the little stone bridge, it is captivating. In summer, it is very busy with walkers and hikers all on a mission to see Malham cove or walk on the Pennine way. A short walk along a lane brings you to the cove footpath, which is well signposted.

The huge natural amphitheatre of the cove is very impressive; you can climb up to the top on the path for great views of Malhamdale and to see the limestone pavement a good example of Karst limestone pavement. The white limestone is riven with deep fissures and gaps caused by erosion, these are home to rare plants and mosses. At the top, there are paths to Malham tarn and Gordale scar and other destinations for walkers and hikers,

Down in the village there are picnic areas, and two pubs that are very popular with day-trippers and visitors. On the edge of the village is the national park centre where you can find plenty of information about the area and things to do. Malhamdale was once home to the travel writer Bill Bryson who called it heaven on earth; the top of the cove was used as a location in a Harry potter film with the young wizards camping there, while escaping capture.
