Penrith

The Cumbria market town of Penrith has a long history, it was the capitol of Owain Caesarius King of Cumbria 920 – 937, his grave is marked by a stone monument in the churchyard. The town has a robust atmosphere with strong well-built houses, notice the streets at the edge of the town these are narrow as it was easier to defend against raiders.

The town suffered attacks from the across the border until the 17th century. The open spaces like Sandgate in the middle of the town were for the cattle to protect them during raids.

These days the town is pleasant stop on the way to explore the nearby Lake District, Penrith has plenty of shops and quaint little tea rooms, check out J&J Graham’s superb deli in the square opposite the clock tower.

The castles ruins can be found in the local park.
