Bishops Castle


The small ancient town of Bishops Castle is set amongst some beautiful scenery in an AONB, the town is a perfect base to explore the gorgeous peaceful scenery of south Shropshire. This part of Shropshire is sometimes called Mary Webb country after the author who used the area as locations in her beautiful books; Bishops Castle was called Mallards keep.

The town is medieval in its appearance and possess some fine architectural styles with timbered houses, cottages and even a house built on crutches. The streets are also lined with posh boutiques and shops with a mix of antiques, curio, and second-hand bookshops to browse so the shopper will have plenty to do.

The High Street climbs steeply to the lovely Georgian town hall and castle ruins where you can stop and picnic amid great views. The town hall also houses an excellent tourist information office.

At the top of the high street check out the Yarborough Book shop and café, where there is an excellent classical music section of cds and vinyl for sale. The nearby castle hotel was an 18th century coaching inn built with stone from the ruined castle.

Bishops Castle is situated on walking paths like the Shropshire way as well as being near places like stiperstones the Long Mynd and the six castles Cycleway.
