Clun

The town was included in AE Houseman’s list along with Clunton, Clunbury and Clungunford as the quietest places under the sun he was probably right. However, on May the place comes alive during the green man festival with mummer’s plays and dances, Morris dancing, minstrels and knights completing the picture. Clun’s Green man day upholds the traditional celebrations against the backdrop of the fine Norman Castle.

Clun developed as a busy crossroads for traveller’s as far back as the Neolithic times later it was visited by drovers and herders on their way to market as the place lies on the Shropshire way. These days the town seems overlooked by the 20th century, which makes it seem somewhat more idyllic and appealing.

Down by the charming medieval bridge there is a small car park and coffee shop, here you can take a short but pleasant walk to the castle ruins on the hill.
