Tavistock

Gateway to the southwestern edge of Dartmoor; Tavistock is the largest town in west Devon. The river Tavy one of the country’s fastest flowing rivers runs through the town, Tavistock developed around a now ruined Benedictine abbey.

The town grew rich on tin and was a Stannary town and a wool centre, the Abbey was destroyed by King Henry VIII, all that remain are part of the church cloisters, three gateways and a tower.

Copper was mined nearby from 1790- 1901 they were the biggest mines in the world at the time; today Tavistock is an agricultural Market town. One of England’s greatest maritime heroes Sir Francis Drake was born not far from the town.

The town is a good base for exploring the Dartmoor National Park.
