Thetford
Thetford 9th century Capitol of the Danes
Thetford which stands on the junction of the rivers Thet and Little Ouse was the birthplace in 1737 of Thomas Paine the author of the Rights of Man, Paine was a supporter of the French and American revolutions Paine lived in America his statue can be seen outside the 17th century Kings House.
Thetford was the capitol of the Danes when they conquered East Anglia in the 9th century, when Christianity was adopted it became the see of the Bishops of East Anglia which lasted until 1091.
The towns is full of many interesting buildings, in every street medieval or Georgian buildings can be seen, other historical remains include the ruins of the 12th century priory along with the Norman castle mound.
