Welshpool

Welshpool lies amidst the hills of the old county of Montgomeryshire; the town’s wide high street is full of fine Georgian houses as well as much older timbered buildings.

This prosperous market town grew due to the River Severn and the Montgomery canal both waterways bringing trade to the town, as the Severn was navigable by boat.

It is the towns magnificent Powis castle that is today the main attraction this border fortress set in beautiful parkland is now in the ownership of the national trust. Once home to the powerful Powis family, over time the castle has transformed into a splendid country mansion with castellated walls as well as lovely terraces that descend for a hundred feet to Yew lined lawns.

Welshpool was originally called Pool but this was changed in 1835 by adding the designation Welsh this was to distinguish it from Poole in Dorset.

For steam enthusiasts and those wishing to go farther afield the Welshpool and Llanfair light railway links the town with Llanfair Caereinion passing through some very scenic countryside on the way.
