Wantage in Oxfordshire was the birthplace of Alfred the great in 849, there is a statute to him in the town square.
The town is mostly 17th and 18th century and there are some cobbled narrow streets to explore one of these has cobbles made from sheep bones.
The church of St peter and St Paul which is part 13th century contains memorials to the Fitzwaryn family into which Dick Whittington married, he later went on to be Lord Mayor of London 3 times.
