Castle Coombe


The charming village of Castle coombe is one of the most visited in England due to its old world feel, with its pretty stone cottages and little bridge over the river Bybrook all set against a backdrop of trees and iconic 15th century English church.

The village takes its name from the castle that once stood further to the north, there is a 14th century market cross and old water pump in the square. The village has appeared in many films it was used as a location in the film Dr Doolittle as well as more recently in Steven Spielbergs War horse. On the TV the village was used as a location in Downton abbey.

The church of St Andrews which was reconstructed in 1850 – 1851 still retains its original fabric and features, there is a memorial and effigy to the knight Sir Walter de Dunstanville the church clock is particularly old dating from the 15th century and one of the oldest working clocks in the country.

Located nearby is the castle coombe racing circuit.
