Buxton Spa

Buxton in Derbyshire grew as a spa town in the late 18th century due to efforts of the 5th duke of Devonshire, the town has a splendid opera house and many fine buildings. These include the Doric style crescent built by the Duke as well as the stables now the Devonshire royal hospital. The Pavilion is a beautiful restored 19th glass and iron construction.

Buxton is known nationally for its bottled water, the mineral laden springs bubble up from 3500-5000ft underground producing 7000 litres an hour, and visitors can fill up at St Anne’s well opposite the slopes gardens.

The romans knew about the spring waters at Buxton and have been drunk ever since. In the summer the opera house holds a regular music and arts festival. At 1000ft Buxton is one of the highest towns in England.
