Matlock Bath is a Derbyshire Spa town, dating from 1780 the town is strung necklace fashion along the river Derwent. A popular spa town it had a hydrotherapy centre built in 1853 on the hillside overlooking the town, these are now council offices. The Victorians built a Pavilion to take the waters it is now an entertainment centre the thermal springs are a constant 20 degrees centigrade.

The town is a popular tourist destination the A6 road which runs through the town carries on through the picturesque Derwent gorge overhead cable cars make the ascent of the heights of Abraham named in honour of General Wolfe of Quebec fame. At the top there is a pleasure park which is also very popular during the summer months, on the top the prospect tower affords fantastic views of the surrounding countryside.

There are several museums dedicated to the lead mining history of the town area, local caves and Caverns the Great Rutland and Great Masson where worked in roman times, several nature trails can also be found. The Cromford mill built in 1771 is a world heritage site and the world’s first water powered cotton spinning mill, it is at the south end of the gorge.
