Bodmin

The ancient town of Bodmin is the county town of Cornwall, famous for its Gaol or prison, public executions took place here until 1909, the town lies on the western edge of the moor of the same name.

The church has the remains of St Guron where there is a holy well, the area is steeped in romance with Jamaica Inn on the moor setting for novels by Daphne Du Maurier. Visitors to Bodmin can take a trip on the Bodmin and Wenford railway which departs from Bodmin station.

The moor itself possesses a bleak desolate beauty and is a place of legends with many prehistoric remains, the wild landscape has some great walking and trails for cycling and hikers alike. The church of St Nonna at Altarnun is renowned as the cathedral of the moor, the nearby Lanhydrock estate has woodland and extensive formal gardens has many clipped yew trees and hedges.
