Beverley

The town of Beverley in the east riding of North Yorkshire is something of a hidden gem its location in the northeast of England has ensured it has remained largely unspoilt. With its Georgian houses and streets and the beautiful St Marys church, it is a lovely place to visit.

Beverley has been likened to a smaller version of York with its interesting architecture and beautiful buildings. The town is impressive for the number of original facades and features retained by not only the houses, but also by the commercial premises as well.

With two magnificent religious buildings the town at one time was the most important centre for Christianity in Northern England. During the Middle Ages despite bad conditions in the rest of the country due to plague and famine Beverley prospered becoming the 10th largest town in England.

St Mary’s Church is said by some to be the most beautiful parish church in England with some features dating back from the 12th century to the time of the Reformation. It was once home to the Guild of minstrels in the North of England. Inside this church there are some beautiful and unusual carvings. There is one of a rabbit carrying a satchel and is said to have inspired Lewis Carroll.

However, it is the magnificent Gothic masterpiece that is the Minster which is the town’s architectural treasure the soaring twin towers can be seen from miles in the flat surrounding country. In the minster there is a Saxon chair a frith stool which when sat in gained the sitter sanctuary for 30 days.

There is a decorated market cross and a busy market is held here every Saturday this small handsome Georgian town also has another major attraction, namely the racecourse, which is well known nationally.
