Fossils and Smugglers


Situated in the North York’s national park on the coast 5 miles south of Whitby this lovely little fishing village is known to the locals simply as bay town. This picturesque place tumbles steeply down the side of the cliffs separating the village into bay town and old bay the downhill part.

The whole place is a lovely maze like jumble of narrow lanes and alley ways all waiting to be explored. On the way you can browse the craft shops artists’ studios and visit the numerous pubs and tea rooms. The kids will love exploring the rock pools at low tide and hunting for fossils.

In the past farming and fishing where the main occupations of the locals but it also had a tradition of smuggling with Tea, gin, rum, tobacco and brandy being the main contraband, smuggled from Europe into Yorkshire. The town now makes a living from tourism and is famous as a location for fossil hunters.
