The historic village of Whalley nestling on the banks of the river Calder has many interesting architectural styles all ranged along the high street there is a total of 23 listed buildings. The village has the ruins of a 14th century Cistercian abbey this was founded in 1296 by Henry De lacy the monks christened it a blessed place.

Abbot Paslew the last head of the abbey was executed for treason in 1536, the abbey was dissolved in the dissolution of the monasteries in1537. There are remains of the walls and foundations as well as the magnificent abbey gatehouse.

The parish church of St Mary and all saints is famous as the site of three large Anglo Saxon crosses which are located in the churchyard. Close by is the Whalley Viaduct which is a large 48 span railway crossing of the river Calder, also nearby the pretty village of down ham is worth visiting.
