Godalming

Ancient market town


The picturesque Market town of Godalming is situated on the river Wey, this delightful old coaching town is framed by a backcloth of steep wooded hills. Nearby the water meadows and grazing cattle along with colourful canal boats moored against the wharf complete this delightful rural setting.

Mentioned in the doomsday book of 1086 as a community with three Watermills and the clan of Godhelm, from which the town took its name. The town grew famous on industries such as Quarrying, paper making and leather work; today it is famous for its school Charterhouse.

History enthusiasts can find a memorial to Jack Philips the RMS Titanic’s radio operator who was born here and educated in the towns Grammar school. The gardens surrounding it were designed by Gertrude Jekyll.

The pleasant high street is home to restaurants and quaint pubs, Church Street featured in the movie the Holiday with Jude Law and Cameron Diaz.
