Clitheroe castle
Norman keep and Museum
Clitheroe castle siting on a limestone mound was built around 1186 by Robert De lacy, the Norman keep which you see today is all that is left of this castle.
During the English civil war, it was occupied by royalist forces the keep was damaged after its capture by parliamentarian forces. In 1848, it was repaired with new limestone blocks which are still visible.
The castle affords great views of the surrounding countryside and Pendle hill, the new atrium cafe sits alongside a fine museum where you can discover clitheroe’s links to turner and Tolkien.
The castle is set in a park and landscaped gardens.
