The West Midlands

Powerhouse of the Nation

The west midlands is one of nine regions of the UK and comprises the counties of Staffordshire, Warwickshire, Worcestershire, Herefordshire and Shropshire as well as areas of the peak district.

The region although landlocked is very diverse due to the fact it encompasses areas of outstanding natural beauty such as the Shropshire hills, Wye Valley the Malvern Hills, Cannock chase and parts of the Cotswolds.

These areas are in stark contrast to the areas of high industrialization located in the West Midland urban conurbation.Britain’s second most populous city Birmingham is located in this region.

This region is home to many industries and companies and is truly the powerhouse of the nation. Despite this industrialisation, it has lots to offer and plenty to explore from quaint villages to areas of unspoilt countryside as well as interesting destinations in the many towns and cities.

From towns such as Stratford upon Avon the home of Shakespeare to Warwick castle or the Iron Bridge gorge which is a UNESCO world heritage site and the birthplace of the industrial revolution. All these places are a must see for any traveller.

Not forgetting the children Alton towers a well-known theme park is situated in Staffordshire and is a great family day out. Notable people associated with this region include Abraham Darby,Josiah Wedgewood,Thomas Telford as well as AE Houseman and of course William Shakespeare.
