Potteries and Canals
The County of Staffordshire lies in the west midlands and encompasses part of the national forest as well as Cannock chase an area of natural beauty and an old hunting ground.
Staffordshire has a manufacturing past with the potteries in the north as well as areas of the Black Country in the south where iron was mined along with coal and limestone. The city of stoke on Trent is known for the pottery industries here large bottle kilns can still be seen and museums visited to learn all about this industry.
Despite the industry, the county great areas of scenic beauty and has lots to offer the traveller as it is rich in history as well. Interesting destinations include Tamworth with its castle perched high on a hill as well as Lichfield with a fine cathedral it is the only medieval cathedral in England with three spires. Cannock chase is a wide-open area of land popular with walker’s cyclists and for other outdoor pursuits. Nearby Chase Water has a host of activities for all the family.
Staffordshire has the largest amount of canals in the country these were developed to support the industries, nowadays they are given over to leisure.
In July 2009, the largest hoard of Anglo-Saxon gold ever found in Britain was discovered in a field near Lichfield. The artefacts, known as The Staffordshire Hoard have tentatively been dated to the 7th or 8th centuries, placing the origin of the items in the time of the Kingdom of Mercia the capital of which was Tamworth.
The famous theme park Alton Towers is located in the county and is great day out for all the family. The national memorial arboretum is at Alrewas near Lichfield. The singer Robbie Williams is from the county.
The name Staffordshire was first recorded in 1016 as Staeffordscir.
