The Fitzwilliam Museum


The Fitzwilliam museum one of the country's finest museums.

The Fitzwilliam Museum was described by the Standing Commission on Museums & Galleries in 1968 as "one of the greatest art collections of the nation and a monument of the first importance". It owes its foundation to Richard, VII Viscount Fitzwilliam of Merrion who, in 1816, bequeathed to the University of Cambridge his works of art and library, together with funds to house them, to further "the Increase of Learning and other great Objects of that Noble Foundation".


The museum has five departments covering items such as antiquities, books, coins as well as a splendid collection of art which includes works by Turner, Cezanne, John Ruskin, Constable and Gainsborough.

In 2016, the museum was voted not only the best in Eastern England but also the country by visit England.

Visit England have announced their annual list of the most popular visitor attractions in the country for 2016. The survey, which gathered information from more than 1,500 English attractions named the Fitzwilliam Museum as the most visited free attraction in the East of England.
